International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Scholarships

The Finishing Trades Institute (FTI) provides educational opportunities for IUPAT members and their families. IUPAT is proud to offer the following scholarships:

The S. Frank “Bud” Raftery Scholarship
The 28th General Convention passed a resolution in 1984 creating the Raftery Scholarship in honor of the former General President Bud Raftery’s service to the IUPAT. Ten $2000 scholarships are awarded annually to children of IUPAT members in good standing. Applicants must submit an essay of between 1000 and 2000 words on an annually chosen essay topic.

A.L. "Mike" Monroe and Ralph D. Williams, III Sports Scholarship
The A.L. "Mike" Monroe and Ralph D. Williams, III Sports Scholarship was introduced and ratified into the union constitution at the 1999 General Convention. Ralph Williams and Mike Monroe were both accomplished boxers as teenagers. In fact, Williams was elected into the Pennsylvania State Boxing Hall of Fame. In spite of their athletic talent, neither man had the resources to attend college. Instead, both joined the trades at a young age. This scholarship offers student athletes the opportunity to pursue their athletic dreams while earning a college degree at the college or university of their choice.

Scholarship applications must be submitted by September 1st. A four-member committee, consisting of a representative from each region, will review the applications. One applicant will be chosen from each region to receive a $5000 tuition grant. Recipients are not eligible to apply for additional IUPAT scholarships and must enroll at their chosen institution within one year of receiving the award.

Applicants must be a legal dependent of an IUPAT member and must be registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. Applicants must have determined in which athletic program they will participate before applying. Applicants should send a high school transcript, a complete record of any financial aid the applicant will receive, a letter of recommendation from the coach or athletic director of the institution at which the applicant will enroll, and a complete history of their athletic participation, including any awards or special recognition.

Applications should be submitted to the IUPAT at A.L. “Mike” Monroe / Ralph D. Williams III Sports Scholarship, 1750 New York Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20006.
